NCIS bid farewell to its beloved star David McCallum on Monday. He passed away on September 25 at the age of 90. McCallum was well-known for his role as Donald “Ducky Mallard,” the quirky investigator, on the show for 20 years. He was the last original cast member.

The episode titled “The Stories We Leave Behind” started with Jimmy Palmer, played by Brian Dietzen, finding Ducky dead in his bed at home, wearing his pajamas, with his sad corgi nearby. The episode, which Dietzen also co-wrote, paid tribute to McCallum’s character by showing flashbacks of memorable moments from past seasons.

During the episode, the team at NCIS investigates a case involving a soldier named Danny whose reputation is tarnished by a politician named Allan Berger. They uncover the truth that Danny was killed because he threatened to expose Berger’s corrupt activities.

As the team solves the case and clears Danny’s name, they prepare for Ducky’s memorial. Tony DiNozzo, played by Michael Weatherly, surprises Palmer with a special gift—a bowtie similar to what Ducky used to wear. DiNozzo praises Palmer for being a good friend to Ducky. The episode concludes with a title card honoring David McCallum’s memory.

McCallum’s character, Ducky Mallard, was a fan favorite known for his wit and wisdom. His presence will be deeply missed by fans of the show.
