Bridgit Mendler: From Disney Star to Northwood Space CEO

  • Bridgit Mendler, former Disney Channel star, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that she’s the new CEO of Northwood Space, a startup aiming to connect Earth and space.
  • Mendler, also revealing she’s a mom to a 4-year-old boy, shared that her interest in space law sparked while working at the Federal Communications Commission’s Space Bureau.

Former Disney Channel star Bridgit Mendler, now 31, shared big news on X (formerly known as Twitter). She’s stepping into the role of CEO at Northwood Space, a startup with a cool goal: making a “data highway” between Earth and space.

In her tweet, she said, “We’re making ground infrastructure from scratch to help more people get into space. Lots to do, but it’s exciting!” The startup has already got $6.3 million in funding, according to Mendler.

Mendler also surprised everyone by sharing she’s a mom to a 4-year-old boy. She said she started fostering in 2021 and adopted him around Christmas in 2022. She called being a parent the best thing ever.

She told CNBC that she got interested in space law while working at the Federal Communications Commission’s Space Bureau. Mendler also shared that she spent time at the University of Southern California, MIT, and Harvard.

The idea for Northwood Space came to her during the COVID-19 pandemic while she was with her family in New Hampshire. Instead of making sourdough bread like many others, they built antennas out of stuff from Home Depot and picked up data from NOAA satellites.

Mendler’s husband, Griffin Cleverly, will be the startup’s chief technology officer. They got married in October 2019, and Mendler said their wedding was magical, with a beautiful sunset and a guy building a sandcastle nearby.

Besides acting, Mendler is also a musician. She released her first album, Hello My Name Is…, in 2012, and an EP called Nemesis in 2016.
