Bafta Awards 2024: Oppenheimer Dominates as Stars Shine

  • Oppenheimer sweeps the Bafta Awards with seven wins, including Best Film.
  • Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. were honored for their performances.
  • Michael J. Fox makes a surprise appearance and receives a standing ovation.

Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and director Christopher Nolan were all honored for their work on Oppenheimer at the Bafta Awards. Murphy won the Best Actor award for playing J. Robert Oppenheimer, known as the father of the atomic bomb, while Downey Jr. won the Best Supporting Actor award.

The movie won seven Baftas, including the best film award. Another film, Poor Things, won five Baftas, with Emma Stone winning the Best Actress award for her role in it.

The best supporting actress went to Da’Vine Joy Randolph for her role in The Holdovers.

Oppenheimer and the actors who won could have similar success at the Oscars, but usually, Bafta and Oscar voters don’t completely agree.

In a surprise appearance, Michael J. Fox announced Oppenheimer as the winner of the Best Film award. He received a standing ovation from the audience. Murphy, after winning his first Bafta, said, “Oh boy. Holy moly. Thank you very, very much Bafta.”

The Irish actor praised his fellow cast members and thanked Nolan for always pushing him to do his best.

This was Nolan’s first Bafta win. He thanked the cast and also acknowledged the film’s backers for taking on a dark subject.

Downey Jr.’s win came 31 years after his last Bafta victory. He thanked Nolan and joked about attempting an understated approach to acting.

Poor Things won the most Baftas with seven wins. Stone won her second Bafta for her role in it.

Randolph was emotional in her acceptance speech and paid tribute to the character she portrayed in The Holdovers.

No British actors won any of the four acting prizes this year.

The award for best British film went to The Zone of Interest, a drama set during World War Two.

The Boy and the Heron won best-animated film, becoming the first Japanese production to do so.

Samantha Morton received the Bafta Fellowship and dedicated it to children in care, as she herself grew up in the care system.
