Samsung and Princeton University: Next Generation of Networks with 6G Technology

In 2019, Samsung introduced the first 5G phone and began working on even faster networks. They set up the Advanced Communications Research Center (ACRC) under Samsung Research. Now, Samsung Research America has teamed up with Princeton University for the NextG Initiative Corporate Affiliates Program.

What’s the NextG Initiative?

The NextG Initiative involves big names like Ericsson, Intel, MediaTek, Nokia Bell Labs, Qualcomm, and Vodafone, along with Samsung and Princeton. Their mission? Turning academic research into real-world products. They want to work with policymakers to shape laws and rules for future 6G applications.

Andrea Goldsmith, Dean of Princeton’s School of Engineering and Applied Science, explained that the NextG program aims to foster deep collaborations in wireless tech and policy. They’re all about driving innovation in a world that’s changing fast.

What’s the Plan?

Samsung and Princeton’s NextG Initiative is diving into cloud and edge networks, smart sensing, and network strength. Why start early? Because making these networks takes time. Samsung predicted we might see the first 6G applications by 2028, but mass use won’t happen until 2030.

The goal of 6G is to deliver super-fast data speeds and almost no delay. We’re talking about peak data rates of 1,000 gigabits per second and latency (that’s the time it takes for data to travel) of less than 100 microseconds.
